Owaissa Rd.
In the northern Virginia suburbs of Vienna, VA, the Owaissa Rd. project revitalized a Craftsman-style home to better suit the evolving needs of a family of five.
As their children grew older, the couple realized their main-level family room no longer provided enough hang-out space for their boys.
They envisioned a basement that could accommodate their children and their friends for various activities, while upstairs, a dedicated office space was needed for work, relaxation, music, and storing an extensive scotch collection.
The basement's irregular shape posed a unique challenge. We addressed this by creating distinct zones: a lounging and TV area, a gaming space, and a quieter zone for sleepovers and other activities. The integration of oak beams and surrounds kept the spaces feeling connected and added warmth to the otherwise austere basement environment.
The long and narrow office space was designed to serve multiple functions.
Custom built-ins with pocket doors were implemented to display the client’s scotch collection when desired and conceal it during work calls. This solution maximized the office space, providing all the functionality needed for working, painting, relaxing, and entertaining.
Design choices in both areas aimed to evoke specific moods. The office, with its moodier palette, was crafted to feel like a sanctuary—a cocoon for focus and unwinding. The basement, in contrast, was designed to be inviting and cozy, ensuring it met the kids' every need and made them feel at home when entertaining friends.
